Building SEL expertise begins with selecting district leaders who will engage in developing a strong knowledge base of SEL research, theory, and implementation methods. This foundational expertise helps develop an inspiring vision that can educate and positively influence other stakeholders in the district about the many benefits of SEL. It’s usually preferable for core leaders to know enough about SEL to make a true commitment to SEL before expertise training begins with a larger group of district stakeholders. This approach enables district leaders to pinpoint areas they wish to expand their expertise in order to support SEL policy and implementation.
Building SEL expertise in district leaders is a process that will take time and strategic engagement to deepen existing knowledge.
